Easy Frozen Espresso Martini Recipe Ingredients

Easy Frozen Espresso Martini Recipe (2)
  • Freshly brewed espresso: you can also use strong coffee, but fresh espresso will have the strongest flavor. Freeze it into ice cubes to contribute to the slushy consistency without watering down the drink.
  • Coffee liqueur: adds to the rich coffee flavor that we get from the fresh espresso. We love using Kahlúa but any coffee liqueur will work just fine!
  • Vodka: we use vanilla vodka to add a bit of extra sweetness. However, regular vodka will work just as well.
  • Simple syrup: use regular simple syrup to sweeten the drink. Or, experiment with options like brown sugar simple syrup or cinnamon simple syrup to add extra depth and a unique taste to your frozen espresso martini.
  • Vanilla extract: pure vanilla extract enhances the rest of the ingredients and adds sweet vanilla flavor.
  • Ice: this combines with the espresso ice cubes to add more volume and creates the perfect slushy consistency.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder: this is optional but delicious and really enhances the coffee flavor.

Optional toppings: don’t get us wrong. This drink is incredible on its own, but it’s even better topped with whipped cream, cocoa powder, or a few coffee beans! You can even add a pinch of cacao powder to the whipped cream for a dessert-inspired drink.

How to Make this Easy Frozen Espresso Martini Recipe

PREP: Prepare the frozen espresso ahead of time. You'll need to prepare a few hours (or preferably one day) ahead of time to make these frozen espresso cubes.

STEP 1: Make the expresso cubes. Brew the espresso, let it cool slightly, and pour it into ice cube trays. Then, freeze for at least 4 hours or ideally overnight.

STEP 3: Blend the espresso cubes. Blend on high speed for about 15 seconds or until the espresso cubes are mostly broken down. If adding cocoa powder, add it now.

STEP 4: Add in ice cubes and keep blending. Add 1 ½ cups of regular ice cubes (not espresso ice cubes) to the blender, and blend on high speed for 25-30 seconds or until the ice is broken up and the mixture is slushy. Be careful not to over blend, or the mixture will melt and become runny!

Substitutions and Variations

  • Make it a mocktail - Just leave out the vodka and the coffee liqueur. Replace the liqueur with cold coffee for an alcohol-free treat.
  • Chocolate espresso martini - Add in 1.5 teaspoons of unsweetened cocoa powder. Coffee and chocolate go really well together, so this is an awesome optional addition.

Tips and FAQ

Top tip

Letting the liquid mixture cool before blending is essential. It prevents the ice from melting too quickly, which can water down your co*cktail.

More tips

  • For an extra cold frozen espresso martini that stays slushy, chill your martini glasses in the freezer for 10-15 minutes prior to making your drinks.
  • If you don’t want to brew your own espresso or coffee, use cold store-bought coffee instead. Just note that the flavor probably won’t be as strong.

Can I Make this Frozen Espresso Martini Ahead of Time?

We don’t recommend making the entire drink in advance, because it will melt and become watery. However, you can prepare DIY co*cktail kits by gathering all the components.

Or, prep the basic ingredients a day or so in advance.

Prepare the espresso ahead of time, and freeze it in an ice cube tray.
Make your simple syrup, if using homemade.
When you’re ready to serve, just combine the ingredients, blend, and serve!

FAQs

How do I make my espresso martini more frothy? ›

The most satisfying part of an Espresso Martini is the foam. To create this, firstly you need to tap and swirl the shaker after adding the ingredients. Once you've done this make sure you shake the shaker hard for 20-30 seconds, this allows the natural oils in the coffee to combine with the air bubbles.

Can you use strong coffee instead of espresso for espresso martini? ›

You can make an espresso martini without an espresso machine using cold brew or drip coffee. Cold brew coffee yields a strong coffee concentrate that can be a substitute for espresso. If you're looking for a milder flavor and a drink that is not as strong, try using brewed coffee.

Should coffee be hot or cold for espresso martini? ›

The recipe in Difford's Guide's 365 Days of co*cktails specifies the espresso must be “freshly made and hot” while Nigella Lawson cautions readers of her Christmas book that it should be prepared the night before “so it's properly cold, chilled if possible, before you start”.

How do I get more crema on my espresso martini? ›

The foam comes from the natural foam that tops a machine-brewed espresso, known as the crema. Adding fresh espresso to a co*cktail shaker that is about half full with ice cubes allows you to aerate the mixture and make it even more foamy.

How do you make espresso more creamy? ›

Freshly roasted beans produce more crema, and that's because when coffee beans are left for too long, they start to lose their carbon dioxide content (degassing). For a rich, velvety crema full of flavour, make sure you grind the beans just before you're about to brew your coffee.

Is Kahlua or Baileys better for espresso martini? ›

Espresso Martini Recipe Ingredients

I recommend Kahlua for a strong coffee tasting espresso martini, or Baileys for a creamier espresso martini.

Why doesn't my espresso martini not frothy? ›

If you're not getting a creamy texture, it could be that your espresso is un-frothed. Make sure to froth your espresso before adding it to the co*cktail shaker for the best results - a good frothy foam will make an amazing difference.

What liquor is best for an espresso martini? ›

The liquor base for an espresso martini co*cktail is vodka. We recommend choosing a premium unflavored vodka made with the finest ingredients to help the drink truly shine. The drink also incorporates a coffee liqueur.

Do bartenders hate making espresso martinis? ›

But if you're a mixologist at work, it's a nightmare. In fact, bartenders notably dislike making these co*cktails because of the prep time, complications, and cleanup of the espresso step alone.

What is a good substitute for Kahlua in espresso martini? ›

For anyone unfamiliar, Bailey's Irish Cream is a whiskey-infused liqueur with flavors of chocolate and vanilla. It's sweet, creamy, and delicious and by using Bailey's instead of Kahlua, the espresso martini is transformed into more of a dessert-like drink, perfect for indulging in after dinner.

What do the three beans in an espresso martini mean? ›

While there are many variations on the espresso martini co*cktail, you could say there's one standard garnish: three espresso beans floating on top. Tradition holds that these three beans represent health, wealth and happiness.

How do I get more espresso foam? ›

Freshly roasted coffee beans will generally produce a more pronounced crema. This is because beans that were recently roasted are still giving off some of the oils and gasses that begin to release after the roasting process. The more oils inside the beans, the more crema will be produced during the extraction.

Why won't my Espresso Martini foam? ›

Nyssa said: "Properly aerating the co*cktail is what helps build the foam on your finished drink so use some muscle power!" You don't need to shake the ingredients for long, in fact, 15-30 seconds "should do the trick" if you put enough energy into it.

How do you get foam on top of a martini? ›

Egg White

Egg white has been (and continues to be) the go-to foaming agent for well over 100 years. Shaking the egg denatures the proteins, and the air that is incorporated while you shake results in a nice foam that holds up well in your co*cktail.

Why is my espresso shot not foamy? ›

Temperature. It is a crucial variable to guarantee the appearance of the foamy layer of the espresso. In general, an excessively high or low temperature in the espresso machine will cause the crema to disappear faster. We recommend a temperature of between 185 and 198 degrees Fahrenheit to ensure a stable crema.
